SizeUK – The National Sizing Survey
SizeUK is a consortium of 16 major UK Clothing Retailers, leading academic institutions and the UK Government. SizeUK carried out the first National Survey of the UK adult population since the 1950’s and was the first survey in the world to use 3D whole body scanners to automatically extract measurements. The consortium is supported by Sizemic, who has worked in partnership with the SizeUK Retailers to exploit the commercialisation of the data and maximise the benefits. Sizemic also provides and maintains the core SizeUK infrastructure.
The SizeUK data is owned by the following Retailers: Arcadia Group, Bhs, Debenhams, Otto UK (Freemans & Grattans), Great Universal Stores (now part of Shop Direct), House of Fraser, John Lewis Partnership, Littlewoods (now part of Shop Direct), Marks & Spencer, N Brown Group, Monsoon Accessorize, Oasis Stores, RedcatsUK, Rohan Designs, Speedo International and Tesco Stores.
The survey was managed and organised by University College London and London College of Fashion and supported by 7 other colleges around the country (Heriot- Watt, Leeds College of Art & Design, University of Central England, Nottingham Tent University, University of Wales Institute and the Southampton Institute).
The results of the survey showed that over 60% of UK shoppers had difficulty finding clothes that fit and average female waist size had increased by 16.5 cm since the 1950’s. The SizeUK Retailers have used the data to update their size charts, improve garment fit and maximise the percentage of their customers that can fit their clothes. In collaboration with the SizeUK Retailers Sizemic has developed a programme of SizeUK Generic Fit Mannequins based on the measurement and shape data – this has proved to be one of the most practical outputs from the survey and has helped the retailers to fully implement the results. The potential commercial benefits for companies acquiring the data are considerable and many other UK and International Retailers have purchased the data since the survey was completed. Sizemic has the exclusive rights to sell the data on behalf of the consortium.
